Gamcheon began in the 1920s as housing for Busan's port workers, then was filled with Korean War refugees, and around 800 Taegeukdo families relocated there in 1955. It was one of the city's poorest districts for fifty years. A 2009 government art project repainted it. Today it pulls in over three million visitors a year, and about 5,600 people still live there.
